On Saturdays, We Shop Small

This semester at Missouri State University, my Principle of Public Relations class has been working on Digital Media Kits. We have finally hit the end of the semester and I’m sure my class can vouch that it has been a great time working on this assignment. This was an introductory assignment to help us scratch the surface while improving our skills on the journey of becoming Communication Specialists. For an introductory class, this has given me a great head start on what to expect in the world of Public Relations.

Bikerwear Wholesale is the business I did my Digital Media Kit on. We used real businesses to recognize and to shed light on Small Business Saturday. Small Business Saturday was the reason behind the content you will see in the Digital Media Kit. Highlighting a small and local business of Springfield, helps to better understand what Small Business Saturday is all about.

Small Business Saturday was created to remind customers that they play a pivotal role in their community. Small businesses can only thrive if they shop and dine at local businesses. Whether that is boutiques, restaurants, or local theaters. Shopping local helps to bring revenue to the community and can attract new customers as well. This event was started by American Express in 2010 and has only gotten bigger. It is celebrated on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Right after Black Friday, but right before Cyber Monday. Small Business Saturdays encourage people by giving discounts, sales, etc., similar to other shopping holidays.

Hopefully, this can encourage you to shop local and participate in Small Business Saturday next year. I expect it to grow bigger and bigger each year. More advertisement and awareness of Small Business Saturday shown. It may never compete with Black Friday or Cyber Monday, but at least it will give people the reminder to shop local and at small businesses. Online records were set this year and I’m curious what is to come next year. Here is my Digital Media Kit, it should give you some more insight on small businesses and Small Business Saturday.
